Hope Emerson was an American actress born on October 29, 1897, in Hawarden, Iowa. She started her acting career on Broadway in the 1920s and later transitioned to film and television. She is best known for her roles as the menacing housekeeper in the movie 'Caged' (1950), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, and as the villainous matriarch Madame Spivy in the TV series 'Peter Gunn' (1958-1961). Her other notable movie credits include 'Adam's Rib' (1949), 'Cry of the City' (1948), and 'Panic in the Streets' (1950).
